All of our therapy and coaching sessions are available to those in Utah who can attend our Cedar City location, as well as online for those outside the area.
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy involves a deep and personal focus on the aspects of life that are causing emotional distress. We strive to help individuals discover their patterns of unhealthy behavior and cope with pain and trauma. Through individual therapy, you will gain perspective and a clearer understanding of your tendencies. You will identify your long-term goals and learn how to move toward them.
Couples Therapy
Romantic relationships are an amazing and wonderful thing. They have the capacity to bring great joy — and also great pain. Sometimes challenges arise that threaten to destroy the relationships that our clients have nurtured and built. Roots Counseling is committed to finding the root of the issue in order to help heal broken hearts.
Group Therapy
At Roots Counseling we believe that every person has the ability to create their own ‘life worth living’. In DBT group therapy, individuals learn specific skills they can apply to their lives on their way to creating that better future. These skills help clients to be mindful, problem solve, cope with crisis, manage interpersonal conflicts, and set and achieve mental health and personal goals.

Adolescent Therapy
Similarly to individual therapy, adolescents will undergo a process of learning that will enable them to recognize areas of pain and discomfort in their lives and understand how these emotions lead to action. They will be able to identify their ineffective behaviors and learn how to deal with situations in a healthy manner that promotes growth. One-on-one therapeutic intervention with adolescents positively impacts development and helps those with trauma or emotional pain to become effective individuals prepared for young adulthood.
Therapy Models
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy)
DBT is a skills-based therapy approach built on the foundation of mindfulness. It is designed to give clients the right tools to recognize emotional dysregulation, relationship struggles, and crisis situations as they are happening so that they can be the most effective version of themselves and do what the situation calls for. These skills are applicable in almost all situations and have been shown to work by numerous mental health specialists.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is a specialized therapy that enables individuals to heal from trauma and emotional distress from their past by reopening and thereby processing the experience. Similar to removing a sliver of wood after the skin already healed above it, this therapy removes the negative belief that an individual holds about themselves, eradicating it completely from the inside out instead of just covering it up with emotional coping mechanisms. All of our therapists are trained in practicing EMDR.
Skills Coaching
In-Person
While clients learn and practice DBT skills in group therapy, it is important that they also practice implementing these skills in their daily lives. Skills Coaches help individuals to apply skills to their unique situation between group and individual therapy sessions. They provide invaluable guidance in integrating DBT skills into the lives of our clients and become a strong member of the individual’s support network.
For those who are unable to attend in-person DBT skills training, online options are available with our Roots Revealed groups and individual coaching. Online clients have access to our trained DBT skills coaches for consistent support throughout their emotional wellness journey.
Specialized Groups
Youth Group
This group is specific to high school age individuals and focuses on healthy patterns of living such as well-regulated emotions, open communication, and motivation in school and other activities. We help adolescents to find purpose and happiness in their lives and become proactive in their own present and future. Youth can learn therapeutic skills at an appropriate level and form uplifting relationships with others whose issues they can relate with.
Young Adult Group
The issues facing young adults are very particular to their stage of life. Anxiety, depression, and traumatic events hit at a time when their bodies and emotional regulators are changing, and they’re in school settings that neither younger or older people can relate to. While transitioning from adolescence into adulthood, it can be difficult to traverse new responsibilities and stressors caused by relationships, education, and careers. We work with individuals in this group and highlight similar life experiences in order to promote healthy coping mechanisms and strategies for a successful life.
Roots to Recovery
When we experience a great deal of emotional pain or discomfort in our lives, we sometimes turn to short-term solutions for our problems. The coping mechanisms we use to deal with emotional pain become habits and addictions. These impulsive choices take us away from our long-term goals of being healthy and effective people. This group focuses on finding the root of the problem and looking at addiction from a dialectical perspective. We foster a safe environment where participants can reflect on the reinforcing nature of their behaviors, accept responsibility for the things they can control, and learn to use more effective long-term solutions to cope with emotional distress.
